An ongoing series of site specific, process based works made from excavated earth fired to 2,500 F onto purpose-built stoneware substrates and mounted into custom designed Corten steel cases. Each work varies depending on the raw materials present in the soil; the colors and textures are created by various mineral deposits, organic matter and urban detritus inherent to the specific locations. Custom works for given locations are possible.
This new exploration of the vessel form is a response to the ‘hands-off’ nature inherent to most precious ceramic works. These pieces are meant to be touched, caressed, treasured. Each large scale vessel is hand built, glazed and fired to 2,400 F, then an electro-condusive adhesive is applied through which electric current is forced while nano-particle fibers of silk or nylon are ‘shot’ at the vessel. The electric current causes the fibers to stand on end in the adhesive and the resulting finish has the look and feel of rich velvet. This has the effect of begging the viewer to stroke and embrace the vessel, while also creating unique gradients of light and shadow unachievable by any other means. Custom forms and colors possible, with no limit on size or color. Finish is robust and archival, so the vessel may be used as such if desired. (better photos coming soon)
